DescriptionA composite of discarded expanded polystyrene (EPSd) and d-limonene is designed to transform 100% of the EPSd into a product that becomes a resin-type raw material for anticorrosive paint and as well as an additive for the modification of type 60/70 asphalts. The properties of this compound do not substantially alter the physical- chemical properties of the products, by keeping their chemical characteristics. Additionally, the compound of EPSd and d-limonene contributes to the environment by transforming large volumes of Icopor into products that society can use, while creating opportunities for employment and entrepreneurship in the recycling sector. The products obtained from the re-designs are a little more expensive than the commercial ones but this increase in price is minimal if we consider that the discarded EPS has no other destination than occupying large volumes in landfills, lagoons, rivers and seas.
