This study analyzes the relationship between the Federal Reserve’s (Fed) monetary policy— measured through the Effective Federal Funds Rate (EFFR)—and the behavior of the main U.S. stock market indices, the S&P 500 and NASDAQ-100, during the 2018–2024 period. Monthly data are used, and the period is segmented into three economic phases: pre-pandemic (2018 2020.02), pandemic (2020.03–2021.12), and monetary tightening (2022–2024), identified through Chow and breakpoint structural break tests. The series are transformed into log differences or simple differences, ensuring stationarity through ADF, KPSS, and ERS-DFGLS tests. For each segment, optimal lags are selected using information criteria (AIC/BIC), and the models are estimated using Ordinary Least Squares (OLS) with Newey–West robust variances, complemented by diagnostics for autocorrelation, heteroskedasticity, normality, and parameter stability. The results show that the EFFR retains a contractionary and statistically significant effect on the S&P 500 during the monetary-tightening phase, consistent with the restrictive stance of interest rate policy. In contrast, the NASDAQ-100 displays a changing sensitivity: negative and lagged during the pandemic, but positive in 2023–2024, when narratives of technological innovation and productivity expectations mitigated the impact of high rates. The control variables—inflation (CPIAUCSL), unemployment (UNRATE), and industrial production (INDPRO)—maintain signs and behavior consistent with macroeconomic theory, confirming their role in the transmission mechanism between the real economy and financial markets. Overall, the findings suggest that the EFFR is a valid and dynamic proxy for the monetary policy stance when combined with temporal segmentation, optimal lag selection, and robust estimation methods. The study provides empirical evidence of temporal and sectoral asymmetry in the stock market’s response to monetary policy and offers a replicable methodological basis for future research on monetary transmission under high volatility contexts.eng
