Abstract

The study aimed to explore the perception of quality of life among informal caregivers of people with Major Neurocognitive Disorder (MND) in Colombia, describing their psychological well-being, social well-being, and life satisfaction. A qualitative approach with a phenomenological design was used. Six women between 40 and 64 years of age participated, all of whom were unpaid primary caregivers, and semi-structured interviews were conducted with them. The data was analysed using thematic analysis with deductive coding. The results show that caregivers experience positive emotions such as gratitude and affection, coexisting with frustration, sadness, and physical and emotional exhaustion. Coping strategies are based on patience, acceptance, and spirituality. Social well-being is affected by the lack of personal time, financial limitations, difficulties within the healthcare system, and a reduction in support networks, which leads to social isolation. Life satisfaction is marked by the feeling of having paused or postponed personal projects, although personal growth and a sense of reciprocity towards the family member being cared for also emerge. In conclusion, the role of informal caregiver involves an emotional, physical, and social burden that affects quality of life. However, the participants find meaning in their experience through emotional bonds, gratitude, and the perception of fulfilling a moral duty.
