Over the last few decades, the fashion industry has taken different turns, changing the consumption habits of all those who engage with it. First, large companies have embraced what is known as fast fashion, changing collections multiple times a year, producing garments at maximum speed with excessively low production costs to offer consumers affordable low prices.
This phenomenon has caused countless social and environmental damages, as the impact of this overproduction of clothing and the entire process it entails is irreparable for the planet. In the last decade, our society has purchased more clothing, worn it fewer times, and discarded it more quickly.
As a result, a new movement has emerged—the antithesis of fast fashion—aimed at slowing down the excessive damage being inflicted on the world, particularly on the environment. Known as sustainable fashion, it seeks to ensure that all processes, from design, production, and the lifecycle of garments to distribution, consumption, and post-sale profits, have meaning and are more conscious. It focuses on preserving and responsibly using the planet’s non-renewable resources, educating consumers about their purchases, and reducing the use of polluting materials such as plastic.
